Free things to do in the Lake District

2 places in the Lake District whose own website says entry is free. Checked Nov 1, 2026.

Facts last checked Oct 25, 2026. Britlens is independent: see our editorial policy.

Places on this page where we hold a photo; the others show sights elsewhere in our guide.

Free means general admission. Special exhibitions and events can be ticketed, some places ask you to book a free slot, and some suggest a donation. Check the venue before you go.

Every entry below is a roman site in our the Lake District guide whose own website said, when we read it, that entry is free. We quote what the page said, link the page, and do not give opening hours, because they change. If a venue's page changes, we remove it at the next check.

Free self-guided walks

Following a walk costs nothing, though places you pass may charge. Each walk page has a map, the route, stops and a GPX file.

  • Tarn Hows circular: A level-ish loop round a landscaped tarn above Coniston, with a Miles Without Stiles route description.
  • West Windermere Way: Newby Bridge to Lakeside YMCA through woods above the western shore of the south basin.
  • Dodd Summit trail: A steep waymarked climb through forest to the open top of Dodd above Bassenthwaite Lake.
  • Carron Crag trail, Grizedale: A strenuous forest loop from the Grizedale visitor centre to the highest point in the forest.

Getting around the Lake District for less

Local transport: Stagecoach buses, boats and trains. The Lake District National Park Authority says Stagecoach runs the main bus network and that "all bus fares are currently capped to £3 per single journey" (as on its page on Oct 25, 2026). It lists day tickets for unlimited bus journeys within one day, combined bus and boat tickets for Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston and Derwentwater, and a Cumbria Travel Pass covering Northern, TransPennine and Avanti trains, Stagecoach buses and Windermere Cruises.

Fares and tickets: Getting to and around the Lake District (opens in new tab). Our getting around guide compares every destination.
