Sheffield

The steel city in the Pennine foothills, with free museums and the Peak District on the doorstep

Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, in the eastern foothills of the Pennines where the River Don meets the Loxley, Porter Brook, Rivelin and Sheaf. Its cutlery trade and the invention of crucible and stainless steel made it a centre of the Industrial Revolution.

The centre is a short walk uphill from the railway station: the Winter Garden, the Millennium Gallery, the Peace Gardens and the theatres of Tudor Square sit side by side. Kelham Island, the old industrial quarter by the Don, is to the north, and the university, Weston Park and the Botanical Gardens are to the west. Roughly a third of the city lies inside the Peak District National Park.
