Research
We use official venue, transport and tourism sources and first-hand visits where possible.
Write
Short, plain and specific. We say when something is a judgement call.
Review
Prices, times and "free" labels are checked against the source.
Update
Pages are re-checked regularly and when we hear of changes.
Independence
- Venues cannot pay to be listed or ranked higher.
- Sponsored content, if any, is clearly labelled, and sponsors do not see or approve our copy before it is published.
- Britlens is independent. It is not run by, or endorsed by, any tourism board, transport operator or venue we mention.
Affiliate links
Some outbound booking links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. They are marked as sponsored links and only appear where a disclosure is shown. Commission does not change what we recommend. See disclosure.
Accuracy and live data
Opening hours, fares, shows and events change often. Always check with the venue or operator before you travel. Weather and journey times come from live third-party services.
How we use AI and machine translation
Draft wording, awaiting the owner's approval. This section describes how the site is made today.
- Drafting. Many guide pages are drafted with the help of AI writing tools. A draft is only published after its facts have been checked against the official pages listed in its sources, and each guide keeps a log of the pages opened.
- Facts. Prices, fares, fees, dates and rules are never taken from an AI tool. They come from the official page and carry the date we read it, or we link to the official page instead.
- Translation. The English pages are the original. Other language versions are machine-translated, with AI, from a shared translation memory; place names, venue names and show titles are left as they are. If a translation and the English page differ, the English page is the reference.
- Photos. We do not use AI-generated images, and we never use a stock photo or a photo of somewhere else to stand in for a real place: a photo captioned as a place shows that place. Any illustrative image that does not show the place itself is labelled as an illustration. Photos come from Wikimedia Commons under open licences (public domain, CC0, CC BY, CC BY-SA or the UK Open Government Licence; never non-commercial or no-derivatives terms), with credits in photo credits.
How often pages are re-checked
Draft wording, awaiting the owner's approval.
- Events and festivals: each listing is re-opened at least monthly; past events drop off when the site is rebuilt.
- Shows: run dates are re-checked against the theatres' listings, and each show page says when.
- Entry rules, visas and fees: re-checked against GOV.UK at least monthly and whenever GOV.UK announces a change.
- Area guides, restaurants and hotels: venue websites are re-checked by script for closures and broken or parked links, and pages are updated when a check or a reader report finds a problem.
- Every guide page shows when it was last checked and the sources used. See how we check.
Corrections
When a fact is wrong we fix the page and record the change, with the date, in our public corrections log. To tell us about a mistake, use the report a problem form or contact us.
