Getting between regions

Trains, coaches and a few tips for planning a trip that spans more than one city. We show distances and published fastest train times, never live fares.

Between each pair of regions

Distances are straight lines between the centres of each guide (roads and rails are longer). Train times are the fastest figures National Rail publishes on its destination pages, and may include a change. They are not a timetable: 37 of 210 pairs have a published figure. Where we found none we say so and send you to National Rail rather than guess.

You can plan a trip across regions on My trip: it orders your saved places region by region and uses this table for the legs between them.

Tips, in plain language

  • Advance tickets are tied to one train. National Rail says they are valid only on the train and date on the ticket, are sold in limited numbers, and can usually be bought up to 12 weeks ahead. Changing one costs a £10 fee plus any difference in price, and they are not refundable unless your train is delayed or cancelled.
  • A railcard can cut the cost. The official railcard site says a standard railcard takes up to a third off fares in Great Britain (the 16-17 Saver takes half). Railcards exist for ages 16-25 and 26-30, seniors, families, two people travelling together, disabled people, veterans and others. A National Railcard also takes a third off Standard class Advance fares.
  • Coaches can be cheaper. Edinburgh's visitor site says coaches often duplicate train routes with cheaper tickets. Compare the journey time as well as the price.
  • Flying. Edinburgh and Manchester both have airports. We list no flight times or fares; use the airport and airline sites below.

Tips come from National Rail (opens in new tab), the railcard site (opens in new tab) and Edinburgh's visitor site (opens in new tab). Rules change; read the conditions before you buy.
