Manchester

Cotton mills, canals, museums and soccer in a compact city center

Manchester grew with the cotton trade, and the canals, railway station and mills that served it are still part of the city center. Castlefield has the site of a Roman fort, the Bridgewater Canal and the world's oldest surviving terminal railway station. Ancoats has a group of early cotton mills.

The Victorian Town Hall, the John Rylands Library and Manchester Cathedral sit close to the Northern Quarter's independent shops and music venues, Chinatown and the canalside Gay Village. Salford Quays and The Lowry are across the river in the separate city of Salford, and both big soccer clubs have stadiums outside the center.

Arriving in Manchester

Manchester has an international airport south of the center, four main railway stations and a coach station near Piccadilly Gardens. Always check the operator for current times, fares and disruption.

By air

Manchester Airport is south of the city center. Manchester Airport says trains to Piccadilly take around 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes, and that trams run direct to Victoria every 12 minutes. TfGM lists the 43 bus between the airport and Piccadilly Gardens.

By train

Manchester Piccadilly is the main station, with Victoria to the north and Oxford Road and Deansgate on the southern side of the center. Avanti West Coast's route page quotes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes from London Euston to Piccadilly. TransPennine Express and Northern also run services.

By tram

Metrolink trams cross the center and reach Salford Quays, the Etihad Campus and Old Trafford. Tap in and out with a contactless card or device, or buy tickets on the Bee Network app.

By bus and coach

Bee Network buses connect at Piccadilly Gardens, Shudehill and Victoria. Long-distance coaches use Chorlton Street coach station, a few minutes' walk from Piccadilly Gardens, and some services use Shudehill Interchange. Check your operator for the stop.

Journey times on this page are the operators' own headline figures. We do not publish schedules or fares.

Walk the center

The Northern Quarter, Chinatown, the civic center and Castlefield are all within a short walk of each other. Salford Quays, Ancoats' eastern edge and the soccer stadiums are easier by tram.

Metrolink stops include Chorlton, Didsbury Village and East Didsbury to the south, and Altrincham, Timperley, Brooklands and Sale to the south-west. Rusholme and Oxford Road are served by buses along Wilmslow Road and Oxford Road.
