Roman Britain trail
Rome ruled much of Britain for nearly four centuries. These are the places where you can still see it, from the hot springs at Bath to the frontier wall across the north of England.
Facts checked Nov 2, 2026 against the sources listed at the end. Britlens is independent: see our editorial policy.
Bath: the Roman Baths
The Roman Baths are among the best preserved Roman remains in the world, at the heart of a World Heritage city. [1] Our Abbey and Roman Baths area guide covers booking and the streets around them, and the journal piece on what to book in Bath helps with timing.
Cirencester: Corinium
Roman Cirencester, Corinium, had walls that enclosed the second-largest city area in Roman Britain. [2] The amphitheatre earthworks and the Corinium Museum are both in or near the town: see our Cirencester guide.
London: Londinium
Londinium, the Roman city, lay where the City of London stands today. [3] Our City and Roman London walk explores it on foot.
York: Eboracum
Eboracum began as a fort and grew into the largest town in northern Roman Britain and a provincial capital; two emperors died there, Septimius Severus in 211 and Constantius Chlorus in 306. [4] Start with our York guide and the Minster Quarter.
Hadrian's Wall
Begun in AD 122, the wall ran from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway. [5] English Heritage cares for several sites along its 73 miles, including Housesteads, the most complete Roman fort in Britain, Chesters with its bath house, and Birdoswald, beside the longest surviving stretch of wall. [6]
- Vindolanda has a fort, a museum and free 45-minute guided tours; its trust estimates only about 27% of the site has been excavated. [7]
- Segedunum at Wallsend, the fort at the eastern end of the wall, is now a museum. [8]
Prices and opening times differ from site to site, so check each one before you go. [6]
