Milsom Street & Walcot: Milsom Street, a Georgian shopping street, with shopfronts on either side

A mini guide to

Milsom Street & Walcot

Georgian shopping streets, a riverside bridge and independent cafés north of the Abbey

Welcome to the area

Georgian shopping streets, a riverside bridge and independent cafés north of the Abbey

North of the Abbey the streets climb from the River Avon toward the upper town. Milsom Street is the Georgian shopping street, while Pulteney Bridge, the Guildhall Market and the Victoria Art Gallery sit close to the water.

Walcot Street runs north with shops, cafés and pubs, and Hedgemead Park gives a green view over the city. Courtyards such as Milsom Place hold many of the restaurants.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

See the weir from the water's edge

Shops line Pulteney Bridge itself, so the best views of the bridge and weir are from Parade Gardens or the riverside.

2

Look into the courtyards

Milsom Place and Shires Yard are courtyards off the main streets, with restaurants and bars away from the traffic.

3

Expect hills

Milsom Street and Walcot Street both climb away from the river. Wear comfortable shoes.

4

Mix the river and the market

The Guildhall Market and the Victoria Art Gallery are both a few minutes from Pulteney Bridge, so they combine easily in one walk.
