Boatyards, river trips and broads on the River Bure, a train ride from Norwich

Wroxham and Hoveton face each other across the River Bure, joined by Wroxham Bridge, which was rebuilt in brick and stone in 1619. Wroxham is often called the capital of the Broads: it has been a centre for boating holidays since the late 19th century, when the railway arrived, and both villages have boatyards and hire firms.

Downstream, Wroxham Broad, Hoveton Great Broad and Salhouse Broad open off the Bure, and the Bure Marshes National Nature Reserve protects the wetland around them. Ranworth Broad and St Helen's Church, called the cathedral of the Broads, lie a few miles east. Hoveton & Wroxham station is on the Bittern Line from Norwich, and the narrow-gauge Bure Valley Railway runs from Wroxham to Aylsham.

出发前须知

1

Take the train in

Hoveton & Wroxham station is on the Bittern Line from Norwich, so you can reach the river without a car.

2

Go downstream for the broads

Wroxham Broad lies about a mile downstream of Wroxham Bridge; Salhouse and Hoveton Great Broad follow further along the Bure.

3

Mind the bridge

Wroxham Bridge is low and narrow. If you hire a boat, use the pilot service on the Hoveton side.

4

See Ranworth church

St Helen's Church at Ranworth, called the cathedral of the Broads, is known for its painted medieval rood screen.
