Entry requirements by nationality
UK entry from China: ETA, visa, plugs and money
What the GOV.UK lists say about visiting from China, what to do next, and the practical differences you will notice on arrival.
Facts last checked Nov 1, 2026. Britlens is independent: see our editorial policy.
Rules change. Check before you travel. Based on the Immigration Rules lists as last updated on Mar 5, 2026, read on Nov 1, 2026. Not immigration advice: confirm with the official GOV.UK checker before you book.

ETA or visa?
Visa list. China is on GOV.UK's Visa National List. Citizens need a visa before they travel to the UK for any purpose, including a short visit, unless an exception in the rules applies.[2]
Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region passports are treated separately and are on the ETA list: see Hong Kong.[2][1]
Your plans can change the answer: GOV.UK says an ETA is not for marrying, working or staying longer than 6 months, and that you do not need one if you already have a UK visa or permission to live, work or study here.[3] Check with the official checker.[5]
What to do next
- For a visit, read Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor: apply online before you travel, no earlier than 3 months ahead. On Nov 1, 2026 it cost £135 for up to 6 months.[6]
- Do not book anything you cannot cancel until you have a decision.
- Passing through the UK only? Transit rules are separate: see our entry requirements guide.
Then work through our pre-trip checklist.

Healthcare and insurance
The NHS says visitors from outside the European Economic Area are charged for hospital care at 150% of the standard NHS rate unless an exemption applies, and should be covered by personal medical or travel insurance for the whole visit.[8]

Plugs and voltage
| Plug types | Household voltage | Frequency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | A, I | 220 V | 50 Hz |
| United Kingdom | G | 230 V | 50 Hz |
China uses plug types A, I at about 220 V, 50 Hz. The UK uses Type G at 230 V, 50 Hz. You need a Type G adapter; check each charger label for 230 V or “100–240 V”.[9] These figures come from Wikipedia’s table of mains electricity by country, which we use as background rather than an official source. Our plugs and voltage answer explains adapters and converters.
