A mini guide to
Loch Katrine's steamship, Ben A'an, Bracklinn Falls and the forest park around Aberfoyle

Welcome to the area
The Trossachs are wooded glens, hills and lochs east of Ben Lomond, inside Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Callander, on the River Teith, is the gateway from Stirling, with the Callander Crags above the town and the Bracklinn Falls on the Keltie Water to the north-east. Aberfoyle, to the south-west, has The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and the Duke's Pass road over the hills.
On Loch Katrine, Glasgow's water supply since 1859, the Steamship Sir Walter Scott has carried passengers since 1900 from Trossachs Pier, where there are also a café, cycle hire and eco-lodges. Ben A'an, a short steep climb, looks down on the loch. On the Lake of Menteith, a boat takes visitors to the island ruins of Inchmahome Priory, where the four-year-old Mary Queen of Scots was hidden in 1547.

Insider tips
Loch Katrine Cruises warns that Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar are 45 minutes apart by road, and that sat nav may not take you to Trossachs Pier: use its GPS or What3Words.
Callander's railway station closed in 1965. Take the train to Stirling and a bus, and check times on Traveline Scotland.
The Hamilton Toy Museum opens from Easter to the end of October and plans to reopen on Mar 26, 2027. Check other attractions' own sites before you travel.
Wikipedia notes several fatal incidents at the Bracklinn Falls. Keep to the paths and away from the water's edge.
