Ullapool is a village and port on Loch Broom, about 45 miles north-west of Inverness, and the largest settlement in Wester Ross. CalMac ferries sail from its pier to Stornoway on Lewis, and fishing boats and leisure craft use the harbour. The North Coast 500 passes through on the A835.

South of the village, Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach are close to the A835 and A832 junction, and Inverewe Garden is further west at Poolewe. To the north lie the Coigach peninsula, the Summer Isles, Stac Pollaidh, Knockan Crag in the North West Highlands Geopark, and Ardvreck Castle on Loch Assynt.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

Book the Lewis ferry with a car

CalMac recommends vehicle reservations on the Ullapool to Stornoway route, so book before you plan the rest of the trip.

2

Check seasonal opening

Ullapool Museum opens seasonally, and some hotels and restaurants in Assynt close for the winter. Check websites before you drive out.

3

Use passing places properly

Roads to Achiltibuie and Lochinver are largely single-track with passing places. Use them to let other vehicles pass, and never park in one.

4

Large motorhomes: avoid the coast road from Lochinver to Kylesku

The North Coast 500 FAQ advises large vehicles to take the A837 back from Lochinver instead of the narrow coastal road to Kylesku.
