Welcome to the area

Tobermory harbour, Duart Castle, Calgary Bay and boat trips to the Treshnish Isles

Most visitors arrive at Craignure, 45 minutes by ferry from Oban, where Duart Castle, the seat of Clan MacLean, stands on its headland a short drive away. The road north follows the Sound of Mull past the ruins of Aros Castle at Salen to Tobermory, the island's main town, with its row of painted houses, a distillery and the volunteer-run Mull Museum.

West of Tobermory, single-track roads lead to Glengorm Castle and the sands of Calgary Bay. Ben More, Mull's only Munro, rises above Loch na Keal, and from Ulva Ferry boats sail to Ulva, Staffa and the Treshnish Isles, where Lunga's seabird colony includes puffins from spring to midsummer.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

Book the car ferry

CalMac recommends vehicle reservations on the Oban to Craignure route, especially in summer.

2

Single-track roads

Most of Mull's roads are single track with passing places, so journeys take longer than the distance suggests.

3

Boat trips are seasonal

Turus Mara runs Treshnish Isles trips from April to the end of July and Staffa trips from Easter to October. Ulva Ferry has no public transport.

4

Check museum opening

The Mull Museum is open from March to the end of October and entry is free, though it relies on donations.
