A mini guide to

Wimbledon

Tennis, the Common and a village on the hill

Welcome to the neighborhood

Tennis, the Common and a village on the hill

Wimbledon is a suburb of south-west London, in the London Borough of Merton. It is best known for the Championships, played each summer at the All England Club, and for Wimbledon Common, one of the largest areas of common land in London.

The area has two centers. The old Village sits at the top of the hill by the Common, and the town, with its station, shops and theaters, lies below. Outside the tennis two weeks it is a calm, leafy place for a long walk and a pub lunch.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

Tennis outside the tournament

The All England Club is a private members' club. Outside the Championships, the Lawn Tennis Museum and its guided grounds tour are the way in.

2

Southfields for the tennis

Southfields is the District line station most used for the All England Club, and it gets much busier during the Championships.

3

Village and town

The Village is at the top of the hill by the Common, and the station and theaters are below it, so allow time and legs for the climb.

4

Check the windmill

Wimbledon Windmill & Museum has its own opening days and sail-turning weekends. Check its website before you set out.
