Where the trains arrive, with the university quarter and Edge Hill beyond

Liverpool Lime Street is the city's main-line terminus, which Wikipedia calls the oldest still-operating grand terminus station in the world, with an underground Merseyrail Wirral line station below. The former North Western Hotel faces it across Lime Street, and the Britannia Adelphi Hotel stands a short walk away on Ranelagh Place.

East of the station is the Knowledge Quarter, home to the University of Liverpool, whose red-brick Victoria Building holds the Victoria Gallery & Museum and whose Garstang Museum covers Egypt, Sudan and the Near East. Further out in Edge Hill are the Williamson Tunnels and one of the oldest railway stations in the world.
