Rainy day in Manchester: free indoor things to do

Rainy day Manchester things to do: three free museums confirmed on their own sites, what to book, what to check, and how to link them in one day.

By Britlens editorial team, Independent UK travel guide Published 3 min read

The short answer

Three Manchester museums say on their own websites that entry is free: the Science and Industry Museum, the People’s History Museum and Manchester Museum. Pick one for the morning and one for the afternoon, and book ahead where the museum asks. [1] [2] [3]

We checked each page on Oct 25, 2026. Hours, closures and exhibitions change, so open the museum’s page again before you leave the hotel.

Science and Industry Museum, Castlefield

Entry to the museum is free. It recommends booking free admission tickets and any special exhibition tickets in advance, though it does not say booking is compulsory. Some special exhibitions and events may carry a charge. [1]

Two traps to know about. Construction work is ongoing, and the museum says some buildings and galleries are closed. The Air and Space Hall is permanently closed. [1] If you are choosing this museum for a particular gallery, look at the page first.

It is on Liverpool Road, M3 4FP, near the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop. There is no on-site parking. [1] Pair it with a short walk round the canal basin if the rain eases; our Castlefield guide has the area.

People’s History Museum, Spinningfields

Entry is free. The museum suggests a donation to keep it free for everyone, but it is optional. Ordinary visits do not need booking, though groups of more than six must book. [2] The On the Line exhibition is listed as free. [2]

The address is Left Bank, Spinningfields, M3 3ER. [2] See our Spinningfields and Deansgate guide for what is around it.

Manchester Museum, Oxford Road

The museum says all its galleries and exhibitions are free to enter. [3] The temporary exhibition Human Natures runs from Apr 22 to Nov 1, 2026 and must be booked in advance. [3] That leaves little time, so if it is the reason you are going, book now. The page does not mention booking for the rest of the museum.

It is on Oxford Road, M13 9PL, at the University of Manchester. [3] That is a different part of town from the other two, so give it its own half day rather than squeezing all three in.

Other indoor options we could not confirm

We tried to check the John Rylands Library on Deansgate, the Whitworth and Manchester Art Gallery, but their websites did not load for us, so we are not saying whether they are free or whether you need to book. Check the official pages before you go:

A simple order for the day

The two city-center museums pair easily, and both are indoors. Manchester Museum is the one to plan separately.

  1. Morning: the Science and Industry Museum. Book the free ticket and check which galleries are open.
  2. Afternoon: the People’s History Museum. No booking is needed for a normal visit.
  3. A second day, or a change of area: Manchester Museum on Oxford Road, with a booking if you want Human Natures.

For more on the city, see the Manchester guide.
