Getting around Wales

The cities and the coast between them have trains and long-distance buses, but the national parks and the western coast are much harder without a car. In Eryri the park authority describes an extensive bus network; in Pembrokeshire the coastal buses are seasonal and one park page we read was out of date, so check the current timetable.

Facts last checked 25 Oct 2026. Britlens is independent: see our editorial policy.

Mixed: depends where you go Our reading of the sources below, not an official rating.

Paying for local transport in Wales

Cardiff Bus and Transport for Wales

  • Cardiff Bus lists "Tap On, Tap Off" for single and day tickets, cash and contactless on the bus, mobile tickets in its app, a Family Travel ticket for up to five people (at least one child and no more than two adults), a Network Rider ticket for several operators in south-east Wales, and PlusBus for rail plus bus.Source: Cardiff Bus (opens in new tab).
  • Traveline Cymru, part of Transport for Wales, plans trips by bus, train, walking or cycling and shows disruption.Source: Transport for Wales (opens in new tab).

Transport for Wales.Transport for Wales Rail lists Advance, season, single, return, flexible and off-peak tickets, sold online, in its app or at stations, with no booking fees. Its site also promoted a £1 bus fare for children and young people (as shown on 1 November 2026).TfW ticket types (opens in new tab)

Getting here

By train

Visit Cardiff says Cardiff is less than two hours from London by train, with services every 30 minutes; Great Western Railway links Cardiff with London, Bristol, Bath and Exeter, Transport for Wales runs services within Wales, and CrossCountry runs an hourly service from Birmingham and Nottingham. Visit Swansea Bay lists direct trains to Swansea from London Paddington, Bristol Parkway, Cardiff, Newport, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Crewe and Manchester. In the north, Visit Conwy points to direct trains along the coast and the Conwy Valley line from Llandudno to Betws-y-Coed, and the Eryri National Park Authority suggests Llandudno Junction for the Conwy Valley line and Shrewsbury for the Cambrian line. 1

By air

Visit Cardiff says Cardiff Airport is in the Vale of Glamorgan, 13 miles west of the city, with direct flights from Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam and other European cities. Visit Conwy lists Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon, Birmingham and Cardiff as nearby airports for the north, and the Bannau Brycheiniog park authority says Cardiff Airport is about an hour from the park. 2

By coach and bus

Visit Cardiff says National Express serves Cardiff from London and along the M4 corridor and that TrawsCymru runs a daily service from mid Wales; Visit Swansea Bay lists National Express and FlixBus services to Swansea. TrawsCymru is the medium and long distance bus network run by Transport for Wales, and the Bannau Brycheiniog park authority lists its T4 (Cardiff to Newtown via Brecon) and T6 (Swansea to Brecon) routes. 3

Once you are there

Eryri (Snowdonia)

The Eryri National Park Authority lists Sherpa'r Wyddfa buses around Yr Wyddfa, the TrawsCymru T10 stopping at Ogwen, and the Conwy Valley and Cambrian railway lines. It says car parks fill between April and September and asks visitors to use the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus for Yr Wyddfa. 4

Pembrokeshire

The park authority's coastal buses page lists the Coastal Cruiser 387/388 for the Angle peninsula and an on-demand Fflecsi service in the north-west and south-west, Monday to Saturday 7.30am to 6.30pm within a set zone, booked by app or phone. Its winter timetable shown was for 2023 to 2024, so the page is out of date: confirm routes and days with Traveline Cymru or Pembrokeshire County Council. Our Wales region data cites Visit Pembrokeshire saying the coastal buses run daily from May to September and on two days a week in winter, so outside summer services are sparse. 5

Plan with Traveline Cymru

Traveline Cymru is the public transport information service for Wales and covers buses and trains. The park authorities point to it for timetables. 6

Buses around Yr Wyddfa

Sherpa'r Wyddfa runs around the base of Yr Wyddfa; the Eryri National Park Authority lists routes to Llanberis, Pen y Pass and Betws y Coed. 7

Coastal buses in Pembrokeshire

Visit Pembrokeshire says the coastal buses run along the whole Coast Path, daily from May to September and on two days a week in winter. 8

Long distance buses

TrawsCymru links towns across Wales. The Bannau Brycheiniog park authority lists the T4 and T6 to Brecon and the Eryri authority lists the T10, which stops at Ogwen. 3

Walk Cardiff and the Taff Trail

Visit Cardiff says the city centre is compact and flat, and recommends the traffic-free Taff Trail for walking and cycling. 9

No timetables or fares are copied here: check the operator or Traveline for the day you travel. Taxis and ride-hailing apps operate in most towns, but we have no sourced coverage data for rural areas, so do not count on one at short notice.

With a car

By car

Visit Cardiff says Cardiff is reached by the M4, with central London about a three-hour drive, and Visit Swansea Bay gives the M4 junctions for Swansea, Mumbles and Gower. For the north, Visit Conwy points to the M56 and A55 from the North West and the M6, M5 and M1 from further south. A car is the easiest way to reach remote parts of the national parks, but the park authorities encourage buses in busy months. 10

Eryri parking and roads

The park authority names the A55, A470, A487 and A493 as the main roads and says several electric vehicle charge points are in the park. Do not park in residential areas or on road verges. 4

Speed limits in Wales

The default limit in built-up areas with street lights is 20 mph in Wales and 30 mph in England and Scotland, unless signs say otherwise (gov.uk). 11

Questions people ask

Can I get around Wales without a car?

The cities and the coast between them have trains and long-distance buses, but the national parks and the western coast are much harder without a car. In Eryri the park authority describes an extensive bus network; in Pembrokeshire the coastal buses are seasonal and one park page we read was out of date, so check the current timetable.

Do I need to check a driving zone in Wales?

We found no charging or low emission zone for Wales in the official pages we read. Check the council site before you drive in.
