Coach tours and group travel
Whether you join an organised coach tour or plan a trip for a group of friends, a few rules shape the day: every traveller needs the right entry document, coach drivers have legal hour limits, and many sights want groups to book.
Facts checked 2 November 2026 against the sources listed at the end. Britlens is independent: see our editorial policy.
Rules are summarised from GOV.UK on the date shown. They change, and they are not legal advice: check GOV.UK for your own case before you book.
Entry documents for a group
There is no group ETA: each person travelling needs an ETA, including babies and children, though one person can apply for others. [1] Tour group couriers employed overseas can come as Standard Visitors to accompany a group. [2] School groups from France and Germany have their own forms: see school trips.
How a coach day works
Bus and coach drivers must follow the drivers' hours rules on driving time and breaks, so long days include fixed stops and itineraries cannot simply be stretched. [3] Northern Ireland has its own rules. [3]
Busy sites manage coach arrivals. At the Giant's Causeway, groups arriving by coach or minibus must pre-book, and the Visitor Experience includes guided tours and audio guides in 11 languages. [4] Check each venue's group booking page before fixing the plan.
Using scheduled coaches
Scheduled coaches link most cities and airports. Our coach and bus guide covers the main operators and coach stations; day trips suggests what you can do from each base.
For groups of friends, the groups of friends overview covers places to stay and things to book together.
