Old cutlery and steel works by the river, an industrial museum and the canal basin

Kelham Island, on the River Don north of the centre, is the heart of old industrial Sheffield. Kelham Island Museum tells the story of the city's steel and cutlery, with the River Don Engine in steam and a Bessemer Converter, and the conservation area around it keeps listed works such as Cornish Place, Globe Works and the gate of Green Lane Works.

Downstream, the river passes the site of Sheffield Castle and Lady's Bridge, where the Five Weirs Walk starts. The Cobweb Bridge carries the path along the Don under the Wicker Arches, and Victoria Quays, the restored basin at the head of the Sheffield Canal, is close by.
