Castle Rock, the old inns at its foot and the square at the heart of the city

Nottingham Castle stands on Castle Rock, a sandstone outcrop with cliffs about 40 m high. The Norman royal castle was demolished after the Civil War, and the building on top today is a 17th-century ducal mansion with museum galleries, a Robin Hood gallery and cave tours. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem and the Museum at Brewhouse Yard sit at the foot of the rock.

Old Market Square, one of the largest paved squares in the UK, is a few minutes' walk north-east, with the domed Council House at its eastern end. North and west of it are the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, the Playhouse with Anish Kapoor's Sky Mirror, the Catholic cathedral and the Arboretum.

Consejos de primera mano

Antes de viajar

1

Add a cave tour

Cave tours at the castle are sold as an add-on to the Castle and Grounds ticket, so buy both if you want to go underground.

2

Brewhouse Yard hours

The Museum at Brewhouse Yard, at the foot of the castle rock, opens at weekends and in holidays; the castle's visit page lists the hours.

3

Children go free

The castle and Wollaton Hall both let children aged 15 and under in free, up to three per paying adult.

4

No parking at the castle

There is no visitor parking on site; walk from the station or use a city-centre car park. Blue Badge parking should be booked in advance.
