Castle Rock, the old inns at its foot and the square at the heart of the city
1 / 10Willkommen in der Gegend
Nottingham Castle stands on Castle Rock, a sandstone outcrop with cliffs about 40 m high. The Norman royal castle was demolished after the Civil War, and the building on top today is a 17th-century ducal mansion with museum galleries, a Robin Hood gallery and cave tours. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem and the Museum at Brewhouse Yard sit at the foot of the rock.
Old Market Square, one of the largest paved squares in the UK, is a few minutes' walk north-east, with the domed Council House at its eastern end. North and west of it are the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, the Playhouse with Anish Kapoor's Sky Mirror, the Catholic cathedral and the Arboretum.
