Working remotely from the UK
The UK has no digital nomad visa. Visitors may keep doing their overseas job remotely, but only as a side activity to a genuine visit, and long or repeated stays bring both immigration and tax questions.
Facts checked 2 November 2026 against the sources listed at the end. Britlens is independent: see our editorial policy.
Rules are summarised from GOV.UK on the date shown. They change, and they are not legal advice: check GOV.UK for your own case before you book.
What the visitor rules say
Since the visitor rules were updated, a visitor may do activities relating to their employment overseas remotely from within the UK, providing this is not the primary purpose of the visit. [1] So answering email and joining calls for your own employer while on holiday is allowed; coming mainly in order to work is not.
- Visitors can usually stay up to six months per visit. [2]
- You must not live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home. [2]
- You cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person for UK clients. [2]
- You may be asked at the border what you plan to do. [2]
Longer stays
If you are eligible, the Youth Mobility Scheme visa lets people aged 18 to 30 (or 35, for some nationalities) live and work in the UK for up to two years. [3] Other long stays need a visa for a specific purpose; check GOV.UK (opens in new tab) for your case.
Tax residence
Whether you count as UK resident for tax is decided by the Statutory Residence Test. You are usually resident if you spend 183 or more days in the UK in a tax year. [4] If a long stay might cross that line, take professional tax advice before you travel.
Practical set-up
- Compare a UK SIM or eSIM with your roaming plan: see phones and SIM cards.
- Public libraries in big cities are good places to work for a few hours; our city guides list the main ones, such as Manchester and Glasgow.
- Plugs, adaptors and what to bring: see packing.
- Money covers cards, contactless and cash.
