Visiting respectfully

  • Check opening times before you go: working churches and cathedrals can close to visitors for services and private events.[15]
  • Some synagogues ask visitors to make contact in advance for security reasons.[19][23]
  • At a gurdwara, expect to cover your head and remove your shoes before the prayer hall.[7]
  • Sightseeing tickets and attending a service are different things at some cathedrals and abbeys: see book ahead for sights that sell timed tickets.

Questions

Can visitors attend services?

Most places on this page say visitors are welcome at services. Some synagogues ask you to contact them first for security reasons, and some sights charge for sightseeing but not for worship. Check the place’s own site.

What should I wear to visit a gurdwara, mosque or temple?

Follow the place’s own guidance. Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall, for example, asks visitors to cover their head and remove their shoes before entering the prayer hall, and provides head coverings at the entrance.
