Classical streets, the Grainger Market, museums and the cathedral

Grainger Town is the 19th-century heart of Newcastle, built around Grey Street, Grainger Street and Clayton Street. Grey's Monument marks the centre; the Theatre Royal, the Central Arcade and the Grainger Market, which opened in 1835, are a few minutes away on foot.

Westwards are Chinatown on Stowell Street, the surviving towers of the medieval town walls, Blackfriars and the Catholic cathedral. The Discovery Museum and the Centre for Life lie near Central Station, while St James' Park and Leazes Park are uphill to the north-west.

Consejos de primera mano

Antes de viajar

1

Look up on Grey Street

The street curves downhill from Grey's Monument towards the river, so the best view of its stone fronts is from the top.

2

Eat in the Grainger Market

The covered market has more than 100 businesses, including cafés and food stalls. Opening hours are on its own website.

3

Follow the town walls

Sections of the medieval wall, with Morden Tower and Durham Tower, run behind Stowell Street in Chinatown, a few minutes from Blackfriars.

4

Match days

The streets around St James' Park and the Haymarket get very busy before and after Newcastle United home games.
