GWR says the Cotswolds have direct connections from London Paddington; check its train times for your date. The Cotswolds Tourism Partnership says the Pulhams 801 leaves from outside Moreton-in-Marsh station, takes about 20 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold and about 30 minutes to Bourton-on-the-Water, and runs hourly Monday to Saturday and every two hours on Sundays. GWR lists Moreton-in-Marsh as step-free (category B2, platform 2 by a ramped bridge). The villages are spread out, so pick one or two. Prices and times change: check before you go, on National Rail.

Prima di partire

The Cotswolds is about 121 km (75 miles) from central London in a straight line, measured from Charing Cross; the rail route is longer. Trains leave from London Paddington. Our rail tickets guide explains Advance, Off-Peak and Anytime tickets, railcards and split tickets, so you can work out which fare suits a day out. On the day, check National Rail for delays and engineering works before you set off.

Opening times, tickets and closures for Cotswolds: by train and bus are on its official website. For sights that can need a timed ticket, see what to book ahead.

Areas to explore in the Cotswolds

Our the Cotswolds guide is split into 6 areas, each with things to do, places to eat, where to stay and how to get there.

  • Broadway: A wide High Street of stone houses below Broadway Tower (8 things to do)
  • Stow-on-the-Wold: A hilltop market town around a large square where the Royalists surrendered in 1646 (8 things to do)
  • Bourton-on-the-Water: Low stone bridges over the River Windrush, with a bird park and a model village (9 things to do)
