GWR says the Cotswolds have direct connections from London Paddington; check its train times for your date. The Cotswolds Tourism Partnership says the Pulhams 801 leaves from outside Moreton-in-Marsh station, takes about 20 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold and about 30 minutes to Bourton-on-the-Water, and runs hourly Monday to Saturday and every two hours on Sundays. GWR lists Moreton-in-Marsh as step-free (category B2, platform 2 by a ramped bridge). The villages are spread out, so pick one or two. Prices and times change: check before you go, on National Rail.

Vor der Reise

The Cotswolds is about 121 km (75 miles) from central London in a straight line, measured from Charing Cross; the rail route is longer. Trains leave from London Paddington. Our rail tickets guide explains Advance, Off-Peak and Anytime tickets, railcards and split tickets, so you can work out which fare suits a day out. On the day, check National Rail for delays and engineering works before you set off.

Opening times, tickets and closures for Cotswolds: by train and bus are on its official website. For sights that can need a timed ticket, see what to book ahead.

Areas to explore in the Cotswolds

Our the Cotswolds guide is split into 6 areas, each with things to do, places to eat, where to stay and how to get there.

  • Chipping Campden: A wool town of stone terraces, a 1627 market hall and the start of the Cotswold Way (8 things to do)
  • Broadway: A wide High Street of stone houses below Broadway Tower (8 things to do)
  • Stow-on-the-Wold: A hilltop market town around a large square where the Royalists surrendered in 1646 (8 things to do)
  • Bourton-on-the-Water: Low stone bridges over the River Windrush, with a bird park and a model village (9 things to do)
  • Burford: A steep medieval High Street running down to the River Windrush (8 things to do)
  • Cirencester: A Roman town turned wool town, with a museum, a landmark church and an amphitheatre (9 things to do)

Weather through the year

Met Office 1991-2020 averages for the Cirencester station (opens in new tab), the one we use for the Cotswolds. Daylight is calculated for the Cotswolds on the 15th of the month. These are averages, not a forecast.

Closest other day trips

Measured in a straight line from the Cotswolds, so the journey between them will be longer. Use the journey planner to see whether a direct train runs.
