Shrewsbury

A medieval street plan in a loop of the Severn, timber-framed houses and Darwin's birthplace

Shrewsbury, Shropshire's county town, sits in a tight loop of the River Severn about 9 miles from the Welsh border. The centre keeps a largely undisturbed medieval street plan and more than 660 listed buildings, many of them timber-framed houses of the 15th and 16th centuries. Roger de Montgomery founded the castle in 1074 and the abbey in 1083. Charles Darwin was born in the town in 1809.

The station sits below the castle at the neck of the river loop. Inside the loop are the Old Market Hall, the museum in Vaughan's Mansion and the Music Hall, St Mary's Church and the round St Chad's above the Quarry park. The English Bridge leads east to the abbey, the Welsh Bridge west to Frankwell and Theatre Severn. About 77,000 people lived in the parish at the 2021 census.
