St Andrews and Fife

Golf links, cathedral ruins, East Neuk harbours and Scotland's old royal capital

Fife is the peninsula between the Firth of Tay and the Firth of Forth, north of Edinburgh. This guide covers three parts of it: St Andrews on the east coast, the fishing villages of the East Neuk along the Forth shore, and Dunfermline with the villages near the Forth Bridge.

St Andrews is a university town with a ruined medieval cathedral, a cliff-top castle and the Old Course. The East Neuk villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem, St Monans and Elie have stone harbours and pantiled roofs, linked by the Fife Coastal Path. Dunfermline, made a city in 2022, holds the abbey where Robert the Bruce is buried and the cottage where Andrew Carnegie was born.
