Restaurant streets, riverside parkland, a cathedral village and the castles and museum beyond

West of the River Taff, Pontcanna is a leafy district of independent restaurants and cafés, with Pontcanna Fields and Sophia Gardens along the river; Visit Cardiff puts it 10 to 15 minutes' walk from the centre. Canton, to the south, has Chapter Arts Centre, Victoria Park and the shops of Cowbridge Road East.

Further north, Llandaff is a cathedral village with the ruins of the Bishop's Palace and the Victorian mansion of Insole Court; Visit Cardiff says it is 45 to 60 minutes on foot from the centre. St Fagans National Museum of History and Castell Coch, on the edge of the city, are best reached by bus, train or car.

Consigli da insider

Prima di partire

1

Book the top restaurants

Visit Cardiff says booking is essential at Gorse, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Pontcanna; several other restaurants here take bookings online.

2

Walk up the river

Visit Cardiff recommends the traffic-free Taff Trail, which runs through Pontcanna Fields and continues north.

3

Allow a day for St Fagans

St Fagans National Museum of History is free and covers a large open-air site on the edge of the city; check the museum site for opening hours.

4

Plan the trip to Castell Coch

Castell Coch stands above Tongwynlais to the north; Cadw's page has visitor information, and Traveline Cymru has bus and train options.
