A mini guide to

Station and Museum Gardens

The National Railway Museum, the station and the Museum Gardens

Welcome to the area

The National Railway Museum, the station and the Museum Gardens

The western side of the centre is York's railway quarter. The station sits just outside the walls, a short walk from Lendal Bridge, and the National Railway Museum, part of the Science Museum Group, is beside it.

Across Lendal Bridge, the Museum Gardens surround the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, the Multangular Tower and the Yorkshire Museum, with York Art Gallery on Exhibition Square close by.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

Check the railway museum's travel page

The National Railway Museum says it is being transformed and that routes to the museum have changed. Check its website for entrances and booking before you go.

2

Lockers

Visit York says lockers are available at the National Railway Museum, near the station, which helps if you arrive by train with luggage.

3

Museum Gardens

York Museums Trust says the Museum Gardens are open seven days a week. The abbey ruins and the Multangular Tower are within the gardens.

4

Step-free views of the walls

The council points visitors who cannot use the wall steps to the Multangular Tower for close views of the Roman and medieval walls.
