A mini guide to

Minster Quarter

York Minster and the medieval streets, gates and halls around it

Welcome to the area

York Minster and the medieval streets, gates and halls around it

The Minster Quarter is the north-eastern heart of the walled city. York Minster, a working church, stands at its centre, with the medieval gateways of Bootham Bar and Monk Bar on either side and the quiet lanes of Minster Yard, Goodramgate and the Bedern close by.

Treasurer's House, St William's College and several small medieval churches are within a few minutes' walk. High Petergate, Low Petergate and Goodramgate have shops, cafés and pubs, and the city walls can be joined at Bootham Bar and Monk Bar.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

Check the Minster's website

York Minster is a working church with ticketed entry. Its website sets out ticket options, services and accessibility, so check it before you go.

2

Walk the walls from a bar

The council says the walls are free to walk, but they close in icy or windy weather and have steps. Bootham Bar and Monk Bar are two places to join them; check the council page for closures.

3

Look for the small churches

Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, and St Michael le Belfrey stands beside the Minster. Check each church's page for opening arrangements.

4

Treasurer's House

The National Trust looks after Treasurer's House beside the Minster. Check its page for current opening, as arrangements can change.
