Introduction
Read the guide
This walk crosses Shoreditch and Spitalfields in the East End. It starts at Shoreditch High Street station. You will see Rivington Street and Hoxton Square, then Columbia Road, Brick Lane, Dennis Severs' House and Christ Church. It ends at Old Spitalfields Market, near Liverpool Street station. Street art changes often, so what you see may differ from what is described.
Stop 1: Rivington Street
Read the guide
Rivington Street is where this walk looks for street art. One account says that on 31 May 2000 the artist Banksy put up twelve stencilled pieces without permission in the Rivington Street tunnel, on walls beside what is now the entrance to Cargo nightclub. Street art here gets painted over and replaced, so do not expect to find that work. Look at what is on the walls today. Next stop: Hoxton Square.

Stop 2: Hoxton Square
Read the guide
Hoxton Square was laid out in 1683 by Samuel Blewitt and Robert Hackshaw, on land leased from the Austen family. It is thought to be one of London's oldest garden squares. Most of the buildings around it are Victorian and unusually tall for that time. Since the 1990s the square has been a centre of London's arts and media scene. The White Cube gallery was on its south side from 2000 to 2012. Next stop: Columbia Road Flower Market.

Stop 3: Columbia Road Flower Market
Read the guide
Columbia Road is known for its Sunday flower market. The market began on Saturdays, then moved to Sunday by Act of Parliament, to suit local Jewish traders. It also let traders from Covent Garden and Spitalfields sell stock left over from Saturday. The shops along the road are Victorian. Nearby, Angela Burdett-Coutts opened Columbia Market in 1869, a covered food market with four hundred stalls. It closed in 1886. Next stop: Beigel Bake.

Stop 4: Beigel Bake
Read the guide
Beigel Bake is a bakery on Brick Lane in Spitalfields. It dates from 1974. It bakes beigels in the traditional Jewish style, and Wikipedia reports it makes seven thousand a day, though that figure is not confirmed by the bakery. The salt beef beigel is its best-known order. Opening times and prices change, so check before you go. Next stop: Dennis Severs' House.

Stop 5: Dennis Severs' House
Read the guide
Dennis Severs' House is at eighteen Folgate Street. The house dates from around 1724. Dennis Severs bought it, run down, in 1979. He set it up as what he called a still-life drama, as if a family of Huguenot silk weavers called Jervis had just left the room. That family is fictional, said to have lived here from 1725 to 1919. The house opened to visitors after Severs died in 1999. Next stop: Christ Church Spitalfields.
Stop 6: Christ Church Spitalfields
Read the guide
Christ Church Spitalfields was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It was built between 1714 and 1729 and consecrated in July 1729. It was one of twelve churches built under a commission set up by Parliament in 1711 to build fifty new churches for London. Six of the twelve were by Hawksmoor. A restoration of the interior began in 2000 and was completed in 2004. Next stop: Old Spitalfields Market.

Stop 7: Old Spitalfields Market
Read the guide
Old Spitalfields Market has roots in a licence from King Charles the First in 1638, which allowed sales on Spittle Fields. The Victorian market buildings date from 1885 to 1893, designed by George Campbell Sherrin for Robert Horner. In 1991 the wholesale fruit and vegetable trade moved to Leyton. The buildings were restored in a regeneration programme in 2005. The walk ends here, close to Liverpool Street station.
