Source: Met Office, Buxton, 1991-2020 averages (Open Government Licence v3.0). Daylight is calculated from the latitude of the Peak District for the 15th of each month. Buxton (about 300 m above sea level) is the listed station nearest the region centre and sits on the high White Peak, so it is cooler and wetter than the valleys and towns on the edge of the park (Sheffield, gcqzwjenb, records 832 mm a year against Buxton's 1,344 mm). Moorland tops such as Kinder Scout and Bleaklow are colder and wetter again. Sunshine hours are published.

Holidays and busy periods

Bank holidays for England come from GOV.UK, listed for the next two years in each month above. Many Britons travel on bank holiday weekends, so book transport and rooms early.

School holidays are set by each local council, so we do not list dates here. Check School term and holiday dates (GOV.UK).

From our the Peak District guide

Opening seasons vary by attraction in the Peak District, and summer-only services such as the Peak Sightseer bus do not run all year. Check each venue's own site before you go.

  • Spring (March to May): The Heights of Abraham's website gives an open season starting in late March, and cable-car and cavern visits can be planned from then.
  • Summer (June to August): The Peak Sightseer open-top bus runs in the summer season, linking Castleton, Chatsworth, Bakewell, Hathersage and the Monsal Trail.
  • Autumn (September to November): Some seasonal attractions close for the winter in early November, for example the Masson Mills visitor centre, so check before you travel.
  • Winter (December to February): Haddon Hall holds a Christmas artisan market each year, and many pubs, hotels and walking routes stay open; check venue sites for winter hours.

We do not publish crowd or price seasonality: none of the sources used for this page states it.

How we work this out

  • Temperatures, rainfall, rain days and sunshine are the Met Office 1991-2020 monthly averages for one weather station (Buxton). They describe a typical month, not a forecast. We never call a live weather service for this page.
  • Packing: warm coat below 10°C highs, warm jacket below 15°C, light layers below 20°C. A full waterproof when a month has 12 or more days with 1 mm of rain or at least 80 mm; a light waterproof from 9 days; sunscreen and a hat from May to September. Shoes with grip when typical nights are 3°C or colder.
  • Daylight is the astronomical day length, including the usual allowance for atmospheric refraction, on the 15th of the month at the latitude of the Peak District.
