Holidays and busy periods

Bank holidays for Scotland come from GOV.UK, listed for the next two years in each month above. Many Britons travel on bank holiday weekends, so book transport and rooms early.

School holidays are set by each local council, so we do not list dates here. Check Scottish school term and holiday dates (mygov.scot).

From our Orkney guide

Several sights open only in summer and Orkney's daylight changes a great deal through the year, so check each website before you travel. Sunshine figures are the Met Office's 1991-2020 averages for Kirkwall.

  • Late spring and summer (April to September): May is the sunniest month in Kirkwall, with about 193 hours of sunshine on average. St Magnus Cathedral opens every day from April to September, and the Westray Heritage Centre opens daily from May to September.
  • Autumn (October and November): Seasonal sights start to close: the Fossil and Heritage Centre in Burray shut for the winter at the end of October 2026, and Hackness Martello Tower is closed in autumn and winter.
  • Winter (December to March): December averages about 26 hours of sunshine in Kirkwall. The cathedral opens Monday to Saturday, and Kirkwall's Ba' games are played in the streets on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

We do not publish crowd or price seasonality: none of the sources used for this page states it.

How we work this out

  • Temperatures, rainfall, rain days and sunshine are the Met Office 1991-2020 monthly averages for one weather station (Kirkwall). They describe a typical month, not a forecast. We never call a live weather service for this page.
  • Packing: warm coat below 10°C highs, warm jacket below 15°C, light layers below 20°C. A full waterproof when a month has 12 or more days with 1 mm of rain or at least 80 mm; a light waterproof from 9 days; sunscreen and a hat from May to September. Shoes with grip when typical nights are 3°C or colder.
  • Daylight is the astronomical day length, including the usual allowance for atmospheric refraction, on the 15th of the month at the latitude of Orkney.
