A mini guide to
Early cotton mills, canals and a redeveloped waterside quarter
1 / 7Welcome to the area
Ancoats lies north-east of the city centre, next to the Northern Quarter. Its cotton mills along Redhill Street and Jersey Street form a nationally important group, and the McConnel & Kennedy and Murrays' mills sit side by side. Many of the old mills are now homes, offices, restaurants and bars.
New Islington, historically part of Ancoats, has a marina on the Ashton Canal and the Chips apartment building. The Etihad Stadium and the National Cycling Centre are a few tram stops further east at Sportcity, and the New Islington tram stop links the area with the city centre.
