A mini guide to
Two cathedrals, a concert hall and theatres on one street
1 / 9Welcome to the area
Hope Street runs from the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral past the Anglican Cathedral to Upper Parliament Street. It is the local high street of the Georgian Quarter and holds restaurants, hotels and bars alongside the Philharmonic Hall, the Everyman Theatre and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, which Paul McCartney co-founded.
The two cathedrals look very different. Liverpool Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, while the Metropolitan Cathedral, nicknamed 'Paddy's Wigwam', is the seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool. Rodney Street, with its Georgian houses and the National Trust's Hardmans' House, and the sunken St James's Gardens lie beside the Anglican Cathedral.
