A mini guide to

Birkenhead & Hamilton Square

A Georgian square, a medieval priory and Paxton's park across the Mersey

Welcome to the area

A Georgian square, a medieval priory and Paxton's park across the Mersey

Birkenhead faces Liverpool across the Mersey, and you can reach it by Mersey Ferry to Woodside or on Merseyrail's Wirral line. Hamilton Square, laid out by the architect James Gillespie Graham, has more Grade I listed buildings than anywhere outside London apart from Trafalgar Square, according to Wikipedia.

Birkenhead Priory, the oldest standing building on Merseyside, is on the waterfront south of Woodside. Inland, Birkenhead Park opened in 1847 and, Wirral Council says, influenced the design of Central Park in New York. The Williamson Art Gallery and the village of Oxton lie beyond it.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

Cross by ferry or train

Mersey Ferries link Pier Head with Woodside, and Merseyrail's Wirral line runs under the river. Check each operator for times and how to pay.

2

Check what is open

The Wirral Transport Museum and its tramway closed in 2023, and U-534 has not been open to the public since the U-Boat Story closed in 2020, according to reports. Check before you travel.

3

Climb the priory tower

Birkenhead Priory's website says St Mary's Tower gives views of Liverpool's waterfront, and lists seasonal opening times. Check them first.

4

Walk Birkenhead Park

Wirral Council says the park is open 24 hours a day and the visitor centre, which has a café, was listed as open 9am to 4.30pm daily on 25 October 2026.
