The cathedral and Magna Carta, the Close, the Market Place and the hillfort of Old Sarum

Salisbury is a cathedral city of about 41,800 people where the rivers Avon, Nadder and Bourne meet, on the southern edge of Salisbury Plain. It grew up around the cathedral begun in 1220, after the bishop's seat moved down from the hilltop at Old Sarum, and received its city charter in 1227.

The cathedral stands in the Close, the largest in Britain, with Mompesson House, Arundells and the Salisbury Museum around its lawns. North of the Close, the Market Place has held regular markets since 1227, now on Tuesdays and Saturdays, beside St Thomas's Church and the Poultry Cross. The Town Path crosses the Harnham water meadows, and Old Sarum is about 2 miles north.
