Willkommen in der Gegend

A Norman cathedral and castle, a 900-year-old market and medieval lanes in the county city

Norwich is Norfolk's city, on the River Wensum. William the Conqueror ordered the castle after the Norman Conquest, and the cathedral was begun in 1096; the castle has housed the city museum and art gallery since 1894. The open-air market below City Hall has traded on the same site for more than 900 years.

The old centre is compact. Elm Hill keeps many Tudor-period buildings, the Royal Arcade of 1899 links the market with Back of the Inns, and riverside paths pass Pulls Ferry and the Cow Tower, a 14th-century artillery tower. Norwich station, across the river from the cathedral quarter, has trains to London Liverpool Street, Cambridge, the coast and the Broads.

Insidertipps

Vor der Reise

1

Auf dem Markt beginnen

Norwich Market, City Hall, the Guildhall and St Peter Mancroft stand around the same square, so it makes an easy first stop.

2

Am Fluss entlang

A riverside path along the Wensum passes Pulls Ferry, where stone for the cathedral was landed, and the Cow Tower.

3

Look inside the churches

Norwich has many medieval churches; St Peter Mancroft is the largest parish church in the city.

4

Use Norwich as a rail base

The Bittern Line runs from Norwich to Wroxham, Cromer and Sheringham, so the Broads and the coast work as day trips.
