Edward I's last castle, Telford's bridge, Plas Newydd and Neolithic tombs along the Menai Strait

Beaumaris, the former county town of Anglesey, stands at the eastern entrance to the Menai Strait. Its castle, begun in 1295 and never finished, is part of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd World Heritage Site, and the town also has a gaol built in 1829 and a courthouse of 1614. Boat trips leave Beaumaris for Puffin Island, and the priory and holy well at Penmon are a short drive east.

The town of Menai Bridge sits beside Thomas Telford's suspension bridge, completed in 1826 and still carrying road traffic; Robert Stephenson's Britannia Bridge carries the railway and the A55 a little to the west. Along the Strait are Llanfairpwllgwyngyll with its famous station sign, the National Trust's Plas Newydd and the Neolithic tomb of Bryn Celli Ddu, with Newborough and Ynys Llanddwyn on the south-west coast.
