Harbour town, open-air seawater pool and the cliff-top ruin of Dunnottar

Stonehaven is a harbour town about 15 miles (24 km) south of Aberdeen, on the main railway line to Dundee. The Auld Toon gathers round the harbour, where the 16th-century Tolbooth is the oldest building in town; the newer town centre and the bay lie to the north, with an Olympic-size open-air pool filled with heated seawater.

A coastal path climbs south past the war memorial on Black Hill and the sea stack of Dunnicaer to Dunnottar Castle, a ruin on a rock almost cut off by the sea, 1.6 miles from the town. Further south the RSPB reserve at Fowlsheugh has large seabird colonies in early summer. At Hogmanay the town is known for its Fireballs ceremony on the High Street.
