Welcome to the area

The Edwardian civic centre and National Museum, then student Cathays and leafy Roath Park

Cathays Park is Cardiff's civic centre, a group of early 20th-century buildings in white Portland stone around Alexandra Gardens. City Hall, the National Museum Cardiff, the Temple of Peace and the Welsh National War Memorial are all here, a few minutes' walk north of the castle.

Beyond them, Visit Cardiff describes Cathays as a lively student neighbourhood with independent cafés and affordable places to eat, about a 10 to 20-minute walk from the centre. To the north-east, Roath has Roath Park and its lake and the cafés and restaurants of Wellfield Road, about 20 to 30 minutes' walk away.
