Holidays and busy periods
Bank holidays for England come from GOV.UK, listed for the next two years in each month above. Many Britons travel on bank holiday weekends, so book transport and rooms early.
School holidays are set by each local council, so we do not list dates here. Check School term and holiday dates (GOV.UK).
From our Portsmouth and Southampton guide
Both cities work all year: the Historic Dockyard is open all year round, and most museums are indoors. The seafront and the ferries are at their best in the warmer months.
- Spring (March to May): Lighter evenings for the Southsea seafront and the Old Portsmouth walls, with fewer visitors than in summer.
- Summer (June to August): The busiest time on the seafront and on the Isle of Wight ferries. Portsmouth's Park & Ride runs on to Southsea on summer weekends.
- Autumn (September to November): Quieter museums and ships. Clarence Pier's rides close for the season, so check its site.
- Winter (December to February): Short days, but the Dockyard, SeaCity Museum, Solent Sky and the theatres are all indoors.
We do not publish crowd or price seasonality: none of the sources used for this page states it.
