A mini guide to
Inside the river loop: the Square, the castle, the Quarry and the bridges
1 / 6Welcome to the area
The station and castle stand at the narrow neck of the Severn loop, with the old Shrewsbury School building, now the library, on Castle Gates. Inside the loop, the medieval street plan leads to the Elizabethan Old Market Hall and the museum and art gallery. St Mary's, the town's largest church, is a few streets north-east.
To the south-west, the round church of St Chad's looks over the Quarry, a park laid out in 1719. The Welsh Bridge crosses to Frankwell and Theatre Severn, with the Quantum Leap sculpture on the bank nearby. The English Bridge leads east out of the loop to Shrewsbury Abbey, and the former prison, now a visitor attraction, is beside the station.
