Welcome to the area

Market town, canal towpaths and country-house parkland south-west of the city

Altrincham is a market town in Trafford, about eight miles south-west of Manchester, and Sale lies three miles to its north-east. Both were historically in Cheshire and now form part of Greater Manchester. The Bridgewater Canal runs through them, and Metrolink trams link both to the city centre.

Altrincham Market and its food hall are the main draw in the town centre, with Stamford Park and the villages of Hale and Bowdon nearby. Sale has the Waterside Arts centre and Sale Water Park, and Dunham Massey, a National Trust country house, lies a few miles west of Altrincham.

Insider tips

Before you go

1

Take the tram

Altrincham and Sale are both on Metrolink, so the tram is the simplest way to reach either from the city centre. Check planned works on the Bee Network site.

2

Start at the market

Altrincham Market is on Market Street, close to the town hall and Altrincham Interchange. Check its own channels for current opening times.

3

Walk the canal

The Bridgewater Canal runs through both towns. Navigation Road in Altrincham and Brooklands in Sale are practical places to join it.

4

Plan Dunham Massey

Dunham Massey is a few miles west of Altrincham. The National Trust site has opening times and any booking rules, so check before you go.
