The short answer
Yes, some Oxford colleges admit visitors, but each decides for itself. There is no single pass and no common timetable. Colleges are working places for students, so opening hours change and a college can close at short notice.
Pick one or two, book where you can, and read each college’s own page for your date. We opened the pages for Christ Church, Magdalen and the Bodleian Libraries for this guide. We could not open the University’s own page on visiting colleges, so we do not describe other colleges here.
Christ Church
Christ Church sells timed tickets online, and its page says tickets are released each Friday. [1] It offers a self-guided multimedia tour, available daily, and guided tours of 40 or 60 minutes with limited availability. Children must be 11 or older on guided tours. [1] Multimedia tour tickets can be changed through an online account up to two hours before your visit. [1]
The page carried a note that guiding was suspended on site when we looked. Check that before you plan around a guided tour. [1]
Closures matter here more than at most places. Parts of the college close for private events or services. [1] The college keeps a known closures page, and at our check it showed:
- The Great Hall closes for lunch, Monday to Friday 12pm to 2pm and Saturday 10.30am to 2pm, during Michaelmas Term. [2]
- The Cathedral closes at 4.45pm on Saturdays for choir practice. [2]
- Dated closures, such as the Cathedral being closed all day on Thu 26 Nov 2026. [2]
Photography is allowed for personal, non-commercial use, but tripods are not. [1]
Magdalen College
Magdalen says you can buy tickets online or on the day, by card only. [3] At our check it was open daily from 5 January to 21 December, from 10am until dusk or 5pm, whichever is earlier, with later closing from July to September. [3] It is closed to all visitors from 22 to 31 December. [3]
Its page also lists one-off closures, including 26 to 28 June 2026. [3] The Hall may close over lunchtime. [3]
Rules to know: dogs other than guide dogs are not allowed, drones are banned, and you may not walk on the grass or picnic in the grounds. [3] Groups are capped at 20 and must book ahead. [3] The page says nothing about exam-period closures, so do not assume there are none.
Bodleian Libraries and the Radcliffe Camera
The Radcliffe Camera is a working library. The Bodleian says its Radcliffe Camera and City of Oxford walking tours are the only way inside. [4] That tour includes about 30 minutes inside the Camera and a walk around central Oxford, and meets on the steps of the Weston Library. [5] It runs on weekends. [5]
Booking is the catch:
- Radcliffe Camera tickets are released online at 9am (UK time) on the 1st of each month for the following month. [4]
- Tickets cannot be reserved or paid for by phone, and they are not refundable. [4]
- Peak-day library tour tickets often sell out within an hour of the Weston Library opening. [4]
- Visitors must be 11 or older. Photography is not allowed inside the Radcliffe Camera. [4]
- Library tours involve stairs, so contact tours@bodleian.ox.ac.uk before you book if you have access needs. [4]
The tour page warns that private bookings and closures can affect which tours run. [5]
How we would plan it
- Choose the day first, then the colleges. Weekends suit the Radcliffe Camera tour, so build the trip around that if it matters to you.
- Book Christ Church online and choose a time that avoids the Hall lunch closure.
- Leave Magdalen as a flexible stop, because you can buy on the day.
- Look at each page again the evening before. Closures are added late.
- Have a fallback. Walking round Radcliffe Square from the street needs no ticket, but we have not checked access to anything else for your date.
Opening hours and prices change. Treat everything above as correct on 25 Oct 2026 and confirm with the colleges.
