The National Motor Museum and Beaulieu Abbey, Buckler's Hard, Exbury Gardens and the harbour town of Lymington

Beaulieu grew up around a Cistercian abbey founded by King John in 1203 to 1204. Today the Montagu family's estate holds the National Motor Museum, Palace House and the abbey ruins on one ticket, and the village sits at the head of the Beaulieu River. Two and a half miles downstream, Buckler's Hard is a hamlet of two Georgian rows where ships for Nelson's navy were built.

Across the river, Exbury Gardens are known for rhododendrons and azaleas, and Lepe Country Park has a mile of beach on the Solent. To the west, Lymington is a sailing town with three marinas, the St Barbe Museum and Wightlink ferries to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. Hatchet Pond, on the heath between, is the Forest's largest body of fresh water.

Insidertips

Voor vertrek

1

Brockenhurst to Beaulieu

Beaulieu says Brockenhurst is the nearest main line station, about seven miles away, with a taxi rank; you can also hire a bike.

2

Check winter openings

Exbury Gardens and their steam railway close for the winter from 31 October apart from Christmas events. Check before you go.

3

Free parking at Beaulieu

Beaulieu's car parks are free and hold up to 1,000 cars, with a separate car park for disabled visitors near reception.

4

Over to the Isle of Wight

From Lymington Pier, Wightlink's ferry takes foot passengers to Yarmouth, so a day trip to the island works without a car.
