Walking safety and mountain weather
Several parks include high, exposed ground where the weather changes fast. Before a hill day:
- Check a mountain forecast, not just the town forecast. The Met Office (opens in new tab) publishes specialist mountain forecasts, and the Mountain Weather Information Service (opens in new tab) covers 10 upland regions across the UK, written largely as warnings.
- AdventureSmartUK suggests three questions before you set off: do you have the knowledge and skills for the day, do you know what the weather will be, and do you have the right gear?
- In an emergency in the hills of England and Wales, Mountain Rescue England and Wales says to note the details, dial 999 or 112, ask for ‘Police’ and then ‘Mountain Rescue’, and stay where you are until the team contacts you. If you cannot make voice calls, register with emergencySMS before you travel.
