Ironbridge Gorge
The Iron Bridge of 1779, Blists Hill Victorian Town and the museums of a Shropshire World Heritage Site
The Ironbridge Gorge is the steep, wooded valley of the River Severn in Shropshire, just south of Telford. Abraham Darby I first smelted iron with coke at Coalbrookdale in 1709, and his grandson Abraham Darby III cast the ironwork for the Iron Bridge, completed in 1779, the first major bridge in the world built of cast iron. The bridge, the village of Ironbridge and the gorge around them form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1986.
Most of the gorge's museums, including Blists Hill Victorian Town, the Museum of Iron and the Jackfield Tile Museum, passed from the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust to the National Trust in 2026; the Iron Bridge itself is cared for by English Heritage. The sites are spread along about five kilometres of valley, so plan the order of your day and book the museums that ask you to.
