A shingle seafront, a pier and two Tudor castles

Welkom in het gebied
Deal is a coastal town where the North Sea meets the English Channel, about eight miles north-east of Dover. A long shingle beach runs the length of the town, with the pier in the middle and Deal Castle, one of Henry VIII's artillery forts, at the southern end of the centre; Walmer Castle is a short walk further south.
Behind the seafront, Middle Street and the streets around it are lined with fishermen's cottages and Georgian houses; White Cliffs Country says the Middle Street conservation area was the first in Kent, designated in 1968. The Timeball Tower and Deal Museum tell the story of the town and the Downs anchorage offshore.

Insidertips
The seafront promenade leads south from Deal Castle to Walmer Castle and its gardens.
English Heritage runs both castles. In November 2026 it listed Deal Castle as open at weekends only and Walmer Castle's interiors as closed for maintenance.
The narrow lanes between Middle Street and the beach hold most of the old houses.
Sandwich is one stop north and Dover a few stops south on the same line.
