The Dublin ferry port, with South Stack's seabird cliffs, Holyhead Mountain and the beaches of Holy Island
1 / 5Welkom in het gebied
Holyhead (Caergybi) is the largest town in the county and stands on Holy Island, linked to Anglesey by causeways that carry the A55, the A5 and the railway. The port, sheltered by a breakwater about 2.7 km long, handles ferries to Dublin, and the station is next to the terminal. In the town centre, St Cybi's Church stands inside the walls of a small Roman fort, and the Maritime Museum and the Ucheldre arts centre are nearby.
West of the town, Holyhead Breakwater Country Park leads up to Holyhead Mountain, the highest point in the county, with the Iron Age hillfort of Caer y Twr on its summit. Beyond are the RSPB cliffs at South Stack and its lighthouse. Trearddur Bay and Rhoscolyn are to the south, and the guide also covers the Neolithic tomb of Barclodiad y Gawres and the Cemlyn lagoon on the north coast.

Insidertips
Holyhead station adjoins the port, but Irish Ferries notes the terminal is closed between 3am and 5.45am. Check in times with your ferry operator.
The coastal trail at South Stack is rugged, uneven and narrow. The RSPB reserve has a level path from the Ellin's Tower car park to the viewpoint.
At Cemlyn the North Wales Wildlife Trust asks visitors to walk on the seaward side of the shingle ridge between late April and August.
Holyhead Maritime Museum closes for the winter and reopens just before Easter; it asks visitors to phone to confirm opening.
